Buzbee for Lt. Guv

The FWST has the scoop:

A little-known outsider with a sizable personal fortune and a central-casting resume says he's giving serious consideration to mounting a challenge against Republican Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst next year.

Tony Buzbee, a 37-year-old lawyer and former chairman of the Galveston County Democratic Party, said the state's GOP leaders are spending too much time fighting among themselves and too little time solving problems like school finance. So he was receptive when some Democratic elders approached him a few weeks ago encouraging him to run for statewide office.

"I'm looking seriously at it, but I haven't said yes or no," said Buzbee, a former Marine Corps captain who led troops in combat during the Persian Gulf War. "I really don't like the way our state is being run right now, and I believe that those of us who have made something in our lives need to be willing to give something back."

The son of a butcher and a school cafeteria worker, Buzbee has made millions of dollars representing injured workers suing big companies and was named one of the top five commercial litigation attorneys in the state in 2003 and a "rising star" in 2004 by Texas Monthly.

Thoughts anyone?

It's not trial lawyer, according to Luntz, the preferred phrasology is "predatory personal injury lawyer."

Yeah, he's got the Edwards profile, the populist, for the little guy nature of, I think does well among conservatives. (This is of course, setting aside any discussion of how the social issues play).

The corporate powers that be have already castrated the civil justice system so much in Texas with their Prop 12, product liablity limits, and asbestos "reform" that trial lawyer issues may be off the table.

Hell, even Carole whatever-her-name will take their money. And it's worth noting that TTLA is still one of the biggest, most powerful players in TX politics.

I think, and I've seen polling to this regard, that there is an anti-corporate wave developing that this guy could ride. (Side note -- I think that's the attack on John Roberts). Especially with the TRMPAC and DeLay corporate contribution scandal, the typical whoring to business in the House, Perry's corporate slush funds, and inability to pass a fair tax plan to fund schools, the trial lawyer storyline might work here.

Now the downside is, the opp research could be deadly. A lot of suits that are entirely legit can seem frivolous in an ad. Has he sued a small business and lost? A family physician? There's a competing narrative about frivolous suits that also has resonance.

Wouldn't it be nice, if we could actually run a whole ticket with a populist, anti-corporate message? Bell would have to stop bitching about video games though...

actually, check that, I'll take video game violence as an issue, if it's in the context of corporations that will do anything for money and don't care about people. Whether it's illustrated violence in video games marketed to kids of Merck committing real violence by marketing Vioxx to adults, we need a check on corporate abuses, and it sure as hell isn't the Republicans. They're the check against gay people adopting. Also, a serious threat, of course.
