these are not the hollywood hills

driving into oaxaca from the airport at night, you see lights up on the hillside. in los angeles, the higher up the hill, the richer the houses.
me to friends who picked me up: "oh, how pretty, is that the swanky part of town?"
them: laughter, followed by explanation that people squat on the hill in shantytowns until the city extends utility service.
